Back in the early 1990's when I was doing some research work for the Universtity of Adelaide Department of Medicine, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, I would pass Gallagher Brothers, a compressor factory on the way to or from my car park.
Eventually, I asked if I could go through their scrap metal bin and luckily the person I asked was Don Wedding who managed the place. Don became a great mentor and he even visited my home one Sunday afternoon to give me some pointers to improve my welding.
He had great shapes for me to work with including all the parts that go into these turtles. Don often had stories of how he was working on the next, even larger kiln for his daughter Lorry Wedding-Marchioro's glass work.
Don loved to see what I managed to invent and make from the basic shapes in his factory and one day he proudly showed me a big flat piece of scrap that he decided was an alien of some sort.
