Tools save the day
One of the great advantages and joys of blacksmithing is being able to invent and create your own tools. This comes in so handy, I sometimes wonder how we managed before.
Firetools
Our first introduction to blacksmithing was to take part in a 9-week (x 3 hours) evening TAFE course that was presented by Geoff Barnes at Panorma TAFE. One of the first things Geoff taught us was how to make a tent peg. Hot on the heels of the tent peg was the task of making a fire-poker. I learnt enough to make my own jig so I was then able to make similar fire-pokers at home. I ended up making a few miniature versions as well and some people received those as gifts. I find the miniatures may look cute but they are actually very handy for all sorts of jobs around the home and garden.
Winemaking
How does blacksmithing relate to winemaking? When you need a tool to open a container that has developed a vaccuum, a specialsed tool might come in handy. Below you will find a tool gifted to one of Adelaide's best known amateur winemakers to open and close wine containers.
Other tools that have been made are specialised drivers for screws with strange or unusual heads, or tools to open up drains in your shower alcove.
What you see when you look at the basket of mulberries? Look for the hook that holds the basket up in the tree.
